How to Get to Bandipur
- From Kathmandu: Tourist bus to Dumre (5 hours), then local bus or jeep up to Bandipur (30 min, $2). Total $10–$15.
- From Pokhara: Tourist bus to Dumre (3 hours), then local bus or jeep up to Bandipur (30 min). Total $8–$12.
- Private taxi: $80–$120 from Kathmandu or $60–$80 from Pokhara. Door-to-door.
重要： Bandipur is 7 km uphill from Dumre (the bus stop on the Prithvi Highway). Tourist buses do not go up to Bandipur — you need to change at Dumre to a local bus (NPR 50, 30 minutes) or jeep (NPR 200). Tell your tourist bus driver you want to get off at Dumre for Bandipur — they will know.
What to Do in Bandipur
1. Explore the Old Town
Bandipur's old town is a single pedestrian street of traditional Newari buildings — ornately carved wooden windows, brick facades, and small shops selling local products. The street is closed to traffic, making it one of the most atmospheric places to wander in Nepal. Best explored at sunset when the light hits the brickwork.
2. Sunset at Gurungche Hill Viewpoint
A 20-minute walk from the old town brings you to the main viewpoint — a stone platform with stunning views of the Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Annapurna (8,091 m), Manaslu (8,163 m) and Machhapuchhre (6,993 m). Best at sunrise or sunset. Free.
3. Visit Thani Mai Temple
A small orange-painted Hindu temple on a hill above Bandipur. The temple is illuminated at night, making it visible from the old town. Best visited at sunset — 15-minute walk up.
4. Visit Silk Farm and Orange Orchards
Bandipur is famous for its silk farming and oranges. Several farms offer tours ($3–$5) where you can see silk worms and the silk-weaving process. Best October–December when oranges are in season.
5. Explore Siddha Gufa (Siddha Cave)
Nepal's largest cave, 30 minutes' walk downhill from Bandipur. The cave is 437 m long and 50 m high, with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Bring a headlamp. Entry $3, plus $5 if you want a guide.
6. Hike to Ramkot Village
A 2-hour hike from Bandipur to the traditional Magar village of Ramkot, where you can see traditional village life unchanged for centuries. Return the same day or stay overnight in a homestay.
7. Take a Cooking Class
Several Bandipur guesthouses offer Newari cooking classes ($15–$25), where you learn to make momos, dal bhat, Newari feasts and the local speciality — Bandipur-style dhindo (millet porridge).

The town was bypassed by the Prithvi Highway in the 1970s, which killed its trade economy but preserved its traditional architecture. In the 2000s, the town reinvented itself as a heritage destination, with strict building codes preserving the Newari architecture. The result is one of the most atmospheric small towns in Asia.
