Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) is the seventh-highest mountain in the world and the most challenging of the major circuit treks in Nepal. The Dhaulagiri Circuit is a 16-day expedition that wraps around the massive Dhaulagiri massif, crossing two high passes above 5,000 m and including several days of glacier walking. It is the hardest, most remote and least-trekked of Nepal's classic 'circuit' treks — and probably the most rewarding for experienced trekkers looking for the next level after Annapurna and Manaslu.
Here is the honest guide I wish I had read before booking: what it costs, what the itinerary looks like, why Dhaulagiri is so much harder than the other circuits, and what you need to know before committing.
What Is the Dhaulagiri Circuit?
The Dhaulagiri Circuit is a 16-day loop around the Dhaulagiri massif, beginning at Beni (a 6-hour bus ride from Pokhara) and ending at Marpha on the upper Kali Gandaki, from where you can connect to the Annapurna Circuit trail. The trek was opened to foreigners in the 1990s but remains sparsely trekked — only a few hundred trekkers attempt it each year, compared to 30,000+ on the Annapurna Circuit.
Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) sits entirely within Nepal, north of Pokhara. The mountain's name means 'White Mountain' in Sanskrit, and its massive south face is one of the largest mountain walls in the world — a 4,000 m vertical drop from summit to base. The circuit takes you around the north side of the massif, through the Dhaulagiri and Chhonbardan glaciers, before crossing the French Pass (5,360 m) and the Dhampus Pass (5,200 m) to reach the Kali Gandaki valley.
The region sits within the Dhaulagiri Conservation Area and is home to blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, snow leopard and a wide range of Himalayan birds. The ICIMOD Nepal pages has detailed ecological information about the region.

Critical safety note: Days 11 and 12 involve crossing two passes above 5,000 m with significant glacier travel. The weather can change in minutes — what starts as a clear morning can become a whiteout by noon. You need an experienced guide who has done the route multiple times, full crampons, ice axe, harness, and ideally a rope team. Do not attempt this trek with a guide who is 'familiar with the route' — only attempt it with a guide who has done it in the past 12 months.
Dhaulagiri Circuit Permits and Cost
| Permit / Item | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|
| Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) | $30 |
| TIMS Card | $10 |
| Licensed guide (per day) | $35–$45 |
| Full-board camping trek (per day) | $55–$70 |
| Pokhara–Beni jeep (shared) | $15 |
| Jomsom–Pokhara flight | $110 |
| Total 16-day trek (all inclusive) | $1,800–$2,500 |
Dhaulagiri is more expensive than Annapurna or Manaslu because there are no tea houses on the upper circuit — you need a full camping crew (guide, cook, porters, tents, kitchen, toilet). This is why the per-day cost ($55–$70) is significantly higher than tea-house treks ($25–$35).
Best Time to Trek Dhaulagiri Circuit
Late April to early June and October to early November are the only realistic windows. April–May is preferred because the days are longer (essential for the long pass-crossing days), the snow conditions are more stable, and the high passes are most likely to be clear. October–November is also possible but cold — the high camps at 4,748 m and 5,140 m can drop to −20 °C at night. Avoid November 15 onwards — the snow on French Pass and Dhampus Pass becomes unpredictable.
Do not attempt Dhaulagiri in winter (December–March) — the upper circuit is essentially a winter mountaineering route. Do not attempt it in monsoon (June–September) — the lower trails are landslide-prone and the upper passes are often clouded in.
How Hard Is Dhaulagiri Circuit?
Very hard — the hardest of the major circuit treks in Nepal. Dhaulagiri involves 16 days of trekking, with 5 nights above 4,500 m, sustained glacier travel, and two passes above 5,000 m. The walking days are not extreme (5–7 hours) but the conditions are demanding: cold, wind, altitude, loose moraine, glacial ice. Prior mountaineering experience (crampons, rope work) is highly recommended — without it, you will struggle on the glacier sections.
Dhaulagiri is for experienced trekkers only. If you have done Manaslu Circuit, Kanchenjunga, or Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake and want the next level, Dhaulagiri is the right choice. If you have only done Annapurna Base Camp or Langtang Valley, do Manaslu Circuit first. For acclimatization basics, see our altitude sickness guide and our how to train for high altitude trekking guide.
Camping vs Tea Houses on Dhaulagiri
Dhaulagiri is essentially a camping trek. The lower section (days 1–6) has basic tea houses in the villages (Dharapani, Muri, Bagar, Dobang), but from Italian Base Camp onwards you need full camping support. The camps are typically:
- Italian Base Camp (3,660 m) — last tea house stop, basic but available
- Glacier Camp (4,250 m) — camping only, on the lateral moraine of the Dhaulagiri Glacier
- Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,748 m) — camping only, on a glacial shelf with close-up view of Dhaulagiri's north face
- Hidden Valley (5,140 m) — camping only, between French Pass and Dhampus Pass, one of the highest regular camps in Nepal
- Yak Kharka (3,680 m) — basic tea house, after Dhampus Pass descent
Your agency will provide a 4-season tent, foam mattress, kitchen tent, dining tent, toilet tent, and a full crew. You should still bring your own 4-season sleeping bag rated to −20 °C — the agency tents get cold at altitude.
Dhaulagiri vs Manaslu vs Annapurna Circuit — Best Circuit Trek?
| Factor | Dhaulagiri Circuit | Manaslu Circuit | Annapurna Circuit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days | 16 | 15 | 14 |
| Max altitude | 5,360 m (French Pass) | 5,106 m (Larkya La) | 5,416 m (Thorong La) |
| Cost | $1,800–$2,500 | $1,200–$1,500 | $800–$1,100 |
| Crowds | Very low | Low | Medium |
| Tea houses | Camping on upper section | Tea houses throughout | Tea houses throughout |
| Difficulty | Very hard (mountaineering) | Hard (high pass) | Moderate (high pass) |
| Best for | Experienced trekkers, isolation | Step-up from Annapurna | First multi-week circuit |
For most trekkers looking for a 'next-level' circuit after Annapurna, Manaslu is the right choice — see our Manaslu Circuit guide. Dhaulagiri is for those who have done Manaslu and want the most challenging circuit in Nepal.

Dhaulagiri is not a trek for everyone. It is hard, cold, expensive and demanding. But for the small number of trekkers who complete it each year, it is the most rewarding circuit trek in Nepal — a true expedition to the wild side of the Himalayas, with mountain scenery that the more popular circuits simply cannot match.
