After the Himalayas, Chitwan National Park is Nepal's most popular tourist destination — and for good reason. This 932 km² reserve in the tropical lowlands of southern Nepal is home to one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, sloth bears and over 500 species of birds. A 2–3 day safari in Chitwan is the perfect counterpoint to a high-altitude trek. Here is the complete 2025 guide.

What to Do in Chitwan
1. Jeep Safari (Half Day or Full Day)
The most popular activity. Open-top 4WD jeeps take you deep into the park in search of rhinos, tigers, bears and deer. Half-day safari (4 hours): $20–$30. Full-day safari (8 hours, includes lunch): $50–$70. Best in early morning (6 am start) or late afternoon (2 pm start) when animals are most active.
2. Walking Safari
A walking safari with an armed guide is the most thrilling way to see the park. You walk quietly through the forest, getting much closer to wildlife than in a jeep. 2–3 hours, $20–$30. Not for the faint-hearted — you may encounter rhinos at close range.
3. Canoe Ride on the Rapti River
Traditional dugout canoe ride along the Rapti river, watching for crocodiles (gharial and marsh mugger), river birds and animals coming to drink. 1.5 hours, $15–$20. Best at sunrise.
4. Visit the Elephant Sanctuary
Chitwan has shifted from elephant-back rides (now banned) to an elephant sanctuary model. Visit the elephant breeding centre and observe elephants being cared for. $5 entry. Note: ethical concerns remain about captive elephants in Nepal — research before visiting. The WWF Nepal elephant conservation page has background.
5. Tharu Village Visit
The Tharu are the indigenous people of the Chitwan valley, with a unique culture adapted to living alongside tigers and rhinos. Visit a Tharu village for $5–$10, including traditional dance performance in the evening.
6. Bird Watching
Chitwan is a birder's paradise, with over 500 species including hornbills, kingfishers, parakeets, eagles and the rare Bengal florican. Best bird-watching is on foot with a specialist guide ($25–$40 for half day). November–March is peak migration season.
7. Visit the Gharial Breeding Centre
Located inside the park headquarters, this breeding centre works to save the critically endangered gharial (fish-eating crocodile). Free entry. 30-minute visit.
Best Time to Visit Chitwan

|---|---|---|---|---|
| October–November | 20–30 °C | Dry | Excellent | Best overall time. Cool mornings, clear skies. |
| December–February | 10–25 °C | Dry | Excellent | Cold mornings, foggy. Animals sun themselves in open areas. |
| March–April | 20–35 °C | Dry | Good | Hot in afternoons. Animals near water. |
| May | 25–38 °C | Some rain | Moderate | Very hot. Animals inactive in afternoon. |
| June–September | 25–35 °C | Heavy rain | Poor | Monsoon. Many lodges close, park muddy. |
Honest verdict: October to early March is the best time for Chitwan. December–February can be foggy in the mornings, but wildlife viewing is excellent as animals seek sun. Avoid monsoon (June–September).

Chitwan Wildlife — What You'll See
One-Horned Rhinoceros (95% sighting rate)
Chitwan has over 600 one-horned rhinos (the second-largest population in the world after Kaziranga in India). You are almost guaranteed to see them — usually from a safe distance of 30–50 m. They are surprisingly fast for their size — never approach on foot.
Bengal Tiger (20% sighting rate)
Chitwan has about 120 Bengal tigers, but they are elusive. Tiger sightings are rare and unpredictable — the best chance is on a full-day jeep safari in the quieter western part of the park. Most tiger sightings are at dawn or dusk.
Other Mammals
- Asian elephant (captive, in the sanctuary)
- Sloth bear (10–15% sighting rate)
- Leopard (5% sighting rate)
- Spotted deer (95% sighting rate, very common)

- Barking deer (40% sighting rate)

- Eagles and hawks (15+ species)
- Owls (6 species)

Chitwan Safety Tips
- Always stay in the jeep during safari — getting out is dangerous and forbidden
- On walking safaris, follow the guide's instructions exactly
- Never run if you encounter a rhino — climb a tree or stand still behind a bush
- Never run if you encounter an elephant — back away slowly
- Do not flash photography at animals — it can provoke them
- Wear neutral colours (khaki, olive, brown) — bright colours disturb wildlife
- Bring binoculars — most animals are best viewed at distance
- Use mosquito repellent — Chitwan has malaria risk (low) and dengue risk (higher in monsoon)
Chitwan Health and Vaccinations
- Malaria: Low risk in Chitwan, but consult your travel clinic about antimalarials. See CDC Nepal malaria guidance.
- Dengue: Higher risk in monsoon. No vaccine or prophylaxis — prevent mosquito bites.
- Japanese encephalitis: Vaccine recommended for stays longer than 1 month in rural areas.
- Rabies: Vaccine recommended for all Nepal travellers. Dogs are common around Chitwan.
- Tetanus: Make sure your booster is up to date.
