How to Get to Bhaktapur from Kathmandu

  • Local bus — NPR 50 ($0.40), 1 hour. Buses depart from Bagbazaar bus park every 15 minutes. Crowded but authentic.
  • Tourist mini-bus — NPR 100 ($0.75), 45 minutes. More comfortable than local bus.
  • Taxi — $15–$25 one-way, 45 minutes. Easiest option. Negotiate fare in advance.
  • Pathao (ride-hailing app) — $5–$8 by motorbike, $12–$18 by car. Cheapest option if you have the app.
  • Private driver — $50–$80 for full day, including return. Worth it for groups.

My honest recommendation: Take a local bus there (cheap, authentic) and a taxi back (you will be tired). Total transport cost: about $15.

What to See in Bhaktapur

1. Durbar Square (Bhaktapur's main square)

The heart of Bhaktapur, surrounded by temples, palaces and the 55-Window Palace (Pachpanna Jhyale Durbar). Don't miss: the Golden Gate (Sun Dhoka), the entrance to the old royal palace — considered the finest piece of art in Nepal. The 2015 earthquake damaged several temples in the square, but restoration is largely complete.

2. Nyatapola Temple

The tallest temple in Nepal (5 storeys, 30 m). Built in 1702 and survived the 2015 earthquake with minimal damage — a testament to Newari engineering. Climb the steps flanked by guardian figures (wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins and goddesses) for the best view in Bhaktapur.

3. Bhairabnath Temple

A 3-storey temple dedicated to Bhairab, the fierce form of Shiva. Originally 2 storeys, rebuilt with 3 storeys after the 1934 earthquake. Damaged in 2015 but restored.

4. Taumadhi Square

Just east of Durbar Square, dominated by Nyatapola Temple. Excellent cafes and rooftop restaurants with views of the temple.

5. Dattatreya Square

The oldest square in Bhaktapur, featuring the Dattatreya Temple (1427 AD) — a temple combining the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Also home to the Brass & Bronze Museum and the Woodcarving Museum (combined entry $3).

6. Potters' Square

A traditional pottery-making square where you can watch Newari potters at work using traditional methods. Buy pottery directly from the artisans. Free to visit.

7. Siddha Pukhu (Siddha Pond)

A peaceful 17th-century pond on the north side of the city. Quiet spot to escape the crowds. Free.

What to Eat in Bhaktapur

  • King curd (Juju Dhau) — Bhaktapur's famous sweetened yogurt, sold in clay pots. The best in Nepal. NPR 50–$1.
  • Newari set — traditional Newari feast (beaten rice, buffalo meat, vegetables, pickles). NPR 400–800 ($3–$6). Try 'Café Nyatapola' or 'Siddhi Manakama' near Durbar Square.
  • Chatamari — Newari rice flour 'pizza'. NPR 100–200.
  • Bara — lentil pancakes. NPR 80–150.
  • Yomari — sweet steamed rice flour dumplings filled with molasses. NPR 80–150.
  • Local tea (chiya) — milk tea from street vendors. NPR 25 ($0.20).

Best Cafes and Restaurants in Bhaktapur

  • Café Nyatapola — 5-storey traditional building, rooftop with views of Nyatapola Temple. Best for traditional Newari food. $3–$8.
  • Siddhi Manakama Restaurant — Newari set menu, traditional atmosphere. $3–$7.
  • Sunny Cafe — rooftop café with mountain views on a clear day. $2–$5.

Tips for Visiting Bhaktapur

  1. Bring the $11 entry fee in cash — credit cards not accepted
  2. Wear comfortable walking shoes — Bhaktapur is best explored on foot, on cobblestone streets
  3. Dress modestly — Bhaktapur is a traditional Newari city
  4. Ask before photographing locals — especially women and elderly
  5. Visit on weekdays if possible — weekends are busier with Nepali tourists
  6. Combine with a visit to Changu Narayan temple (UNESCO site, 6 km from Bhaktapur)
  7. Avoid mid-day in summer (April–June) — too hot. Morning or late afternoon is best.

Is the $11 Entry Fee Worth It?

Yes. The entry fee goes toward maintaining the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ongoing restoration work after the 2015 earthquake. Bhaktapur is the only Nepal city that actively charges entry — and the money is visible in the quality of the restoration. Pay the fee and explore for a full day.
