What’s the best way to predict mountain weather in the Himalayas? Ask the locals! Even if they are just farmers living along the foothills, they’ll know more about weather than you do — and they might even have some interesting tips to share with you! Here are 5 tips on how to predict mountain weather in the Himalayas, straight from some of the locals who live there year-round.

What you need to know about mountain weather

The weather in mountain areas is more unpredictable than in flat land. This is largely due to the fact that mountain weather depends on a variety of factors such as altitude, wind direction and wind speed, temperature, humidity and pressure.

Additionally, any effect that these factors may have on one another will add to their unpredictability. That being said, there are several predictable patterns in Himalayan mountains weather. The unpredictability does not mean you should avoid or fear it; it simply means you need to be prepared for anything and trust your instincts when you're out exploring. For instance, instead of waiting around for clear skies before setting off on a trekking trip through one of Nepal's valleys or meadows, you might consider traveling during bad weather instead.

Why it’s harder to predict mountain weather

One would assume it’s easier to predict mountain weather than, say, city weather. Mountains are, after all, tall. That’s not always true; mountainous regions often experience microclimates that make mountain weather harder to predict than city weather. In addition to altitude and latitude issues, mountains can also impact climate by creating a wind barrier—sometimes protecting areas on one side of a mountain from harsh winds while exposing places on another side of it to gale-force gusts.

Add in nearby water sources and topography that could alter local weather patterns (think rivers or valleys), and predicting mountain weather isn’t easy—even for climatologists who have a wealth of resources at their disposal.

The Mountains Are Alive With the Sound of Weather

When we talk about weather, it seems like a pretty straightforward subject. But when you’re talking about Himalayan mountain weather—which involves constantly changing and vast geography, completely unique microclimates, and intrepid mountaineers—you’re talking about something that’s not quite so cut-and-dry. The most difficult thing to predict? When it will start snowing.

This can happen at any time of year, which poses challenges for climbers and visitors alike. Since parts of Nepal are in such close proximity to the roof of the world (Tibet), they get some of that region's harsh winter conditions while they're still enjoying their warm springtime weather in other parts of Asia.

When will it snow?

Predicting weather in mountainous areas is far from an exact science. If you plan on hiking or climbing in a snowy mountain range, it’s helpful to know when (and when not) to expect snow. While there are dozens of factors that can influence whether a mountain will see snowfall—the time of year, wind and precipitation patterns, temperatures and more—there are two basic factors that play an especially key role: latitude and elevation.

What's the best clothing for hiking in cold conditions?

While many people automatically reach for a light jacket and shorts when planning their hiking attire, it’s important to remember that cold conditions can often be more than just uncomfortable.

They can be downright dangerous. Because of these dangers, all hikers should familiarize themselves with some basic facts about mountain weather before hitting their next trail.

Can I still travel with children if there is snow?

Yes, you can still travel to Nepal even if there is snow. In fact, from October to March, weather on the Mountains tends to get better and more stable compared to spring. As long as one knows how to plan for it, there is no reason why your trip should be delayed or cancelled due to snow in Nepal. After all, isn’t winter a time for adventure?

Snow, what should I do?

What should I do about snow? Snow poses a challenge for visitors hoping to reach their destination, but there are things you can do to ensure your journey goes smoothly. First of all, plan ahead! Research where your hotel or hostel is located and see how accessible it will be with snow on the ground—if it’s not easily accessible, reconsider staying there.

Stay safe during snowfall

If you’re planning a trip to one of these mountains and it happens to be snowing, keep an eye on local media for weather updates. The easiest way to stay safe is to have your own winter gear—including gloves, waterproof boots, a warm hat, and appropriate clothing—but if that’s not possible, make sure you know where shelter is available. Though Himalaya mountains are known for their beautiful landscapes and jagged peaks, unpredictable snowfall can put visitors at risk.

Looking forward to Trekking

Most of us look forward to a trek in Himalayas with great anticipation. As soon as we are done with our day jobs, we start dreaming about being on top of those majestic mountains or to see those beautiful alpine lakes or to see wild animals from close range.

We dream about all these things. And some day when you reach your destination and get ready for a two-to-three day trekking trip, it is not about enjoying them - it is mostly about suffering from Himalayan mountain weather. That's why I am always looking for a good forecast before planning my next trip so that I don't face any unpleasant surprises during my hiking experience. Most people do same but then how come one person can predict Himalayan mountain weather better than others?
